Learning Objectives:
To provide an overview of the etiology of and risk factors for eating disorders.
To learn how to recognize disordered eating in the primary care setting.
Management strategies for eating disorders
Practice GAP:
Primary care providers may lack confidence and training in identifying and managing early signs of eating disorders, particularly in patients who present with normal weight or atypical symptoms.
Despite increasing prevalence—especially since the COVID-19 pandemic—early identification is often missed due to subtle presentations, evolving diagnostic criteria (e.g., DSM-V changes), and limited integration of nutritional, psychological, and medical management strategies in primary care.
